Personal Review and Reflection

Looking back on my choreographic journey throughout the year, it is interesting to see what has changed, the challenges I faced and resolutions I made to develop my final piece of choreography. This year has been a challenge for me personally due to the lack of collaboration between my teacher and peers in comparison to the previous years. However, I have learnt to trust the process and to not be too hard on myself when it comes to creating movement.

After running through my piece beginning to end for the first time, I realised how exhausting it was and I struggled to perform the ending as highly as I did the start. I knew that I wanted to have a big impact at the end - as this has been my goal from the start of the process- so I knew adjustments had to be made. I went through each section and found different ways in which I can reserve energy for example allowing pauses or slowing down movements. This also links back to my stimulus as throughout the book the characters take time to reflect on their life and plan how they will spend the rest of their final hours, the use of the pauses also allows the audience to process my journey more as they have more time to reflect. In addition, I also noticed that I needed more emotive expression throughout my piece to make the story clear to the audience, including long stares and body language will help me develop this. But other than these corrections I am pleased with how my choreography looks and feels to dance and am excited to show what I have produced.

The final last-minute change I had to make was my music. It was hard for me to decide on how long I wanted the high pitch sound to last, my first attempted I started with 10 seconds a reduced it by two seconds every two minutes, however after running my piece I felt although the 10 seconds broke my rhythm and the flow of my dance. I felt like I was waiting for the pitch to end rather than embracing the sound for what it was and feeling an emotion connection with how it tells the story. So, to improve this I stated the pitches at 6 seconds, this allowed me to still make a connection with the story and I felt it flowed so much better in general.

Overall, these adjustments have made me very confident going into my showing and I am highly pleased with how my choreography is feeling to perform. I am confident that my showing will go well, and that the audience will understand my message.
