Practitioner Study

Researching into 'The Living Idol' a choreographic piece by Rudolf Laban (1921) - my chosen practitioner - I have been able examine how Laban uses his choreographic processes in practice. Throughout the piece you can clearly see his 8 efforts and how he adapts them throughout the scene to fit within a group of dancers. For example, at 0:42 - when the male dancer enters- you can see how the dancer uses float and glide as a way to increase the body ripples making the overall movement more expressive and dynamic. In correlation, Body ripples with dynamic arm-lines are repeated throughout by the men and women... in addition, this creates and huge juxtaposition and creates a sense of surprise to the audience increasing their participation.  The Living Idol Final Scene:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h30TZREaiio Having viewed 'The Living Idol' I have identified similar qualities between this piece and my choreography so far... using glide, float and press as a way to resem...

Motif Development

Reflecting on my creative process so far, I have been struggling to create movement in which I am proud of and happy to include within my final product. This has been a huge challenge productively and mentally as I have not managed to hit my target time.  Through the use of Rudolf Laban's eight efforts, I have managed to choreograph just over 1 minute of choreography instead of the end target of 3 minutes. However, I am happy with what I currently have and am looking forward to carry on my creative process... As said in a previous blog, I have separated my dance into 4/5 sections: Structure 1 - Calm Structure 2 - News/Panic Structure 3 - Understanding Structure 4 - Death  Structure 5 - Afterlife?   Starting with Section 1 I wanted to create a clam a relaxing atmosphere to warmly introduce the audience to the character I am playing- this character being a calm/ likeable soul who cares for others however like most of us takes things for granted- ...

Chosen Practitioner

Image
Rudolf Laban – a movement theorist and choreographer - is the practitioner I have chosen to invest my choreography inspiration from this year. I have dedicated my research to Laban, as I was fixated to his beliefs and exploration of the body, I knew that this was something I wanted to experiment with and use within my own work.    The novel ‘Mastering Movement the Life and Work of Rudolf Laban’ by John Hodgson clearly states that Rudolf “examined where, how and when the body changed position and considered the effects that moving had on an individual” (Hodgson. J, Pg.22), this concept in highly interesting to me and a dancer stepping into the position of a choreographer as from past experiences I have noticed how un-natural movement can lose the flow/rhythm of the movement, creating and stagnant and static phrase (which can also create an uncomfortable and unsettling feeling on the audience). In addition, I suspect that having this concept with me whilst creating my pie...

Research

Image
To expand my perspective on my initial stimulus further, I researched into the idea of life after death, looking into different religions/beliefs to see how the vary and change. I wanted to deepen my research on this subject as it will help me broaden my creativity giving me more options and pathways to take my choreography later in my process. Additionally, this will give me a wide range of ideas on ending my choreography… do I want to present reincarnation?... Do I want to present Heaven and Hell?... Do I want to present spiritual beliefs?     I first began to investigate Christianity and their eternal faith in God. Christians emphasize in forgiveness and judgement after death, spending eternity in heaven if they have properly repented their sins to God or Hell if they have lived a sinful life (Museum of Art and Archaeology, N/A) I am inspired by this religion to present the idea of heaven and Hell and how your actions on earth determined where your souls lie. This wi...

Initial Idea/Stimulus

When encountering my final stimulus idea, I knew I wanted to follow a narratives perspective to keep the audience attentive and to help carry me through the creative process. Looking back at last years practice – our group choreography- I remember how much a narrative helped create emotion and exposure between us as dancers and the audience to helped provoke the message in which we were aiming to portray… this is something I want to bring into this year’s performance.    The novel “They Both Dire at the End” by Adam Silvera takes the reader on a highly emotional journey, from sympathy to cheerfulness to heartbreak which is what captivated and inspired my final stimulus idea. Death-cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to unsympathetically tell the 18-year-olds something metamorphic: they are going to die today… The two meets through social media in which they spend their last day together adventuring and living ‘a lifetime in one single day’.  “They...
