Motif Development
Reflecting on this week’s choreography I have created a further 40 seconds onto my choreography. This week I have been focusing on Rudolf Laban's 'effort system' which revolves 8 different characterizations in which the body its moved:
- Floating
-Dabbing
-Wringing
- Thrusting
-Pressing
-Flicking
-Slashing
I began by organising the 8 effort qualities based on their dynamics, this allowed to me then plan in advance where I wanted portray each effort throughout the whole of my solo. This is how I organised them:
From here I created small movements in which fitted to the 'soft' category. At first, I was overwhelmed by the variety of movement I could create, so I was bit lost and didn't know where to start. I then decided that I was going to break it down into different body parts starting with my arms. As a classical based dancer and after watching Labans "The Living Idol" I managed to easily create several movements in which not only fitted in with my category but also the narrative of this section. I then did the same process but with different body parts such as my legs and torso. To my surprise I found creating soft movements with my legs very challenged, I think this is due to your legs not being very malleable- only going front side and back- to overcome this I made more use of my plie making my movement more grounded. Overall, I really enjoyed this choreographic process and am excited to see how I can adapt these movements to fit my other categories.
My next creative session I am going to focus on creating movement for my second section. The song I have chosen for this is called 'Never Fight a Man with a Perm" by Matt Emery. I want to create movement now to my 'sharp' category in which will fit with the second section of my choreography. Reflecting back to second year I want to include more choreographic devices within my piece, including accumulation, reversal, retrograde and fragmentation. I am excited to start and get stuck in with this new section of my choreography.
